Two transit networks connect Velachery residents to the rest of Chennai. The first is the Chennai MRTS. The second is the Green Line metro via St. Thomas Mount. Together, they cover OMR, the airport belt, the city centre, and North Chennai.

Chennai MRTS — At Your Doorstep
The Velachery MRTS station opened in November 2007. It sits near the junction of Velachery Main Road and Inner Ring Road. It is a short walk from Prestige Park Street. The MRTS runs from Velachery to Chennai Beach. It covers 21 km across 19 stations. Trains run from 5 AM to 11 PM every day. Fare is Rs. 5 to 15 for most stops.
From Velachery MRTS you reach Perungudi in 5 minutes. Perungudi is on OMR. It has IT parks, offices, and Apollo Hospital. You reach Taramani in 7 minutes. Taramani has IIT Madras and Tidel Park. Chennai Beach is 30 minutes away.
The MRTS extension opened in March 2026. The line now runs from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount. St. Thomas Mount is a major interchange hub. From there, you switch to the Green Line metro and the Chennai suburban rail. Velachery residents can now reach the full metro network without a car.
Green Line Metro — Via St. Thomas Mount
The Green Line runs from Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount. It is 22 km long with 17 stations. Trains run from 4:30 AM to 11 PM. Frequency is 5 to 14 minutes. Fares range from Rs. 10 to 50.
From Velachery, take the MRTS to St. Thomas Mount in 8 minutes. At St. Thomas Mount, switch to the Green Line. You can then reach Little Mount, Guindy, Alandur, Ashok Nagar, Vadapalani, and Chennai Central. Alandur is the key interchange. At Alandur, switch from the Green Line to the Blue Line for airport access.
Blue Line Metro — Direct Airport Access
The Blue Line runs from Chennai Airport to Wimco Nagar Depot. It is 32.65 km long with 26 stations. It goes directly to Chennai Airport. Trains run from 4:50 AM to 11 PM.
Prestige residents at Velachery reach the airport by MRTS plus metro in under 35 minutes. That is often faster than driving during peak hours. The airport is 10 km by road, but morning traffic on GST Road can take 30 to 40 minutes.
Metro Phase 2 — What is Coming
Chennai Metro Phase 2 adds 118.9 km of new lines. Three new lines are under construction.
- Purple Line runs from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri SIPCOT 2. It is 45.4 km long with 48 stations. It is expected to open by March 2027. This line covers Adyar, Sholinganallur, and SIPCOT on OMR. Velachery residents who travel to Sholinganallur will benefit directly.
- Yellow Line runs from Poonamallee Bypass to Lighthouse. It is 26.1 km long with 27 stations. It is expected to open by June 2026. This line covers Porur, Koyambedu, Anna Nagar, and Adyar.
- Green Line Extension will run from St. Thomas Mount to Sholinganallur. It adds 47 km and 47 new stations. It is planned to open by late 2026. Velachery residents can take the MRTS to St. Thomas Mount, then the extended Green Line all the way to Sholinganallur on OMR. That covers the full South Chennai IT belt in one journey.
